Naomi Campbell Hints at Retirement at the 2018 Fashion for Relief Show

As one of the buzziest events at the Cannes Film Festival, Naomi Campbell’s annual Fashion for Relief gala always manages to start a conversation—everyone from Carla Bruni-Sarkozy to her Gen Z doppelgänger Bella Hadid steps onto the catwalk to raise funds for international relief causes. This year, however, the hostess may just have provided the evening’s most talked-about moment. Addressing the audience at the Aéroport Cannes Mandelieu, Campbell hinted that her runway days may be numbered. “I don’t know if I can walk much longer, it’s been 32 years,” she reportedly shared. “But it’s an honor to walk. . . . I’d love for it to be carried on by the younger generation and for me to sit in the audience and watch.” Cue the gasps.

Whether or not she meant it, the prospect of a modeling world without Campbell is daunting, as unlike most of the supers, she never fully left the industry. Where many others have taken time off to raise families, rebranded their careers, or simply faded into obscurity, Campbell has nearly remained a constant. Still as relevant now as she was in her ’90s heyday, her career sits at the pinnacle of the industry, from opening doors for black models to serving as a muse for the best designers. To this day, she gets a standing ovation when she deigns to walk a show and makes headlines with each new project.

Only time will tell if Campbell truly intends to take a break, but one thing is certain—she’s not stepping out of the spotlight. As a philanthropist, she’s raised millions for AIDS research and environmental causes, while her acting ambitions have seen her take to the small screen with roles on Empire and American Horror Story. Her career has also included stints as a musician, restauranteur, reality television host, and designer. More importantly, Campbell is currently set to receive the 2018 CFDA Fashion Icon Award in June, so she’s not finished with fashion quite yet. Whatever she’s got planned next is sure to be interesting.
